Toronto Argonauts Eskimos Rivalry

The Toronto Argonauts Eskimos rivalry was born in the Grey Cup final, and has since thrived in the championship game. It turns out that, aside from bringing out the best in players and the best moments of football, the Grey Cup championship game also brings out the best inter-divisional rivalries.

Indeed, while the Toronto Argonauts and Eskimos meet infrequently during the regular season, their encounters during the Grey Cup final have forged a unique rivalry. Each time that the Toronto Argonauts and the Eskimos have met in the final, the occasion has been momentous and unforgettable.

For example, the first instance in which both teams faced each other in the championship game was during the 9th Grey Cup in 1921. Interestingly, this was the first east-west Grey Cup championship in Canadian history. Also worth mentioning is the epic 1987 Grey Cup championship, when the Eskimos defeated the Argos 38-36 due to a last second field-goal. Also, who could forget the iconic Snow Bowl of 1996, when heavy snow, freezing temperatures, and vicious winds contributed to the intensity of the final?

The Toronto Argonauts Eskimos rivalry is still alive and well today and, as both teams are among the most successful teams in Canadian football history, it’s only a matter of time before we’re graced with another superb championship game.
