The numbers are in, and they’re as unbelievable as they are spectacular.

You didn’t need to be a genius to predict how well Taylor Swift’s latest album 1989 would fare during its debut week. In truth, many anticipated that the debut week sales for Taylor Swift’s recent album would be exceptionally high. After all, T-Swift is no stranger to tremendous first-week sales; her 2010 album Speak Now amassed 1.047 million sales during its first week in the U.S., while 2012’s Red soared with 1.21 million sales.

Still, no one could have possibly predicted that the debut week for Swift’s latest work would become the largest sales week since 2002.

According to the Nielsen SoundScan, Swift’s 1989 has sold a whopping 1.287 million in its first week. With her latest masterpiece, Swift has boldly defied expectations (industry experts had previously predicted that 1989 would sell approximately 750 000 copies in its first week), and established herself as a driving force in the music industry.

The last time that such an impressive feat was accomplished was in 2002, when Eminem’s The Eminem Show sold 1.322 million copies during its second week on the charts. The album’s massive prosperity has made Swift the only single platinum in 2014. Additionally, 1989 has already become the biggest-selling album released in 2014 (the soundtrack to Disney’s Frozen has sold 3.5 million copies, but was released in November 2013).

Featuring the singles “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space”, 1989 finds T-Swift shedding her country roots and venturing into the world of pop. The album is notable for its experimental electronic sound, and its heavy use of synthesizers and a pulsating bass.

Not only is Swift back with a new album, new sound, and new look; she’s back with a new tour! To promote 1989, Swift will embark on a world tour that will see her perform at Canadian venues such as Montreal’s Bell Centre, Toronto’s Rogers Centre, and Ottawa’s Canadian Tire Centre.
